Situated in the Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts, the Wasgamuwa National Park is about 225 km away from Colombo. This area is one of the primary reserves and is the home for a large number of elephants. Wasgamuwa National Park Safari will give you a blended experience filled with a nature-rich environment, large mammals, and a variety of bird species. Also, it is one of the iconic bird areas on the island.

The dry zone climate in the region results in a daily average temperature of about 28 degrees Celsius. October to January is the rainy season, and the annual rainfall is 1650–2100 mm, which is pretty high when compared to most other national parks in Sri Lanka. Hence, avoiding the rainy season is highly advisable for enjoying a peaceful safari experience. Anyway, this high rainfall makes the area to hold grasslands, and primary, secondary, riverine forests.

Wasgamuwa National Park Safari: The safari trail through the breath-taking environment will undoubtedly give you a serene feeling. 33 mammals including Sri Lankan elephants and 143 bird species make it a complete safari experience that comes with a higher wildlife spotting chance. The elephant herd may contain up to 150 individuals. Other iconic mammals such as water buffalo, axis deer, sloth bear, leopard, and Small golden palm civet live in large numbers in the park’s region. Out of the 143 bird species, eight are endemic species to Sri Lanka. Reptiles, butterflies, fishes, and lizards are the other animal species that you will witness in abundance here.
